Spitting or Swallowing

By Carrie White on

At some point in your life you will come across this particular question: Do you spit or swallow? Of course, it could be referring to absolutely anything but if you happen to be talking to your lover, it will generally mean do you spit or swallow semen after you’ve given him a blowjob.

As with most things in a sexual sense, spit or swallowing your partner’s semen will come down to your personal preference. Not everyone will like the taste or the consistency and, therefore, will always choose to spit it out after orgasm.

Several questions you may ask are:

• What is semen?
• What does it look/taste like?
• How much semen is produced and ejaculated?
• If I swallow it, will it do me any harm?
• What if I don’t like the taste?
• My partner says he would love me to swallow his semen, but I’ve never done it before. Do I have to? And, if I do, how do I learn how to do it?

Any questions or doubts about spit or swallowing are perfectly natural and if you’ve never done if before or would love to know more about it, then do read the rest of this article.

What is semen?

Semen is the fluid containing the sperm when he ejaculates. Along with the sperm, semen contains about six calories and it is made up of protein, water, sugar, calcium, chlorine, magnesium, nitrogen, vitamin B12, hormones and zinc. So, you can see from this that there is nothing in his semen that will cause any problems for your health, but you would have to consume gallons of the stuff to make any real difference to your well being!

Obviously, sperm can also carry STD’s which can include the HIV virus so if you haven’t been going out with your partner for long or are unsure of your partner’s sexual history, always use a condom during sex and oral sex to prevent infection.

What does it look/taste like?

The taste and look of semen can vary from person to person but generally, semen is grey or white in colour with a slightly sticky feel to it to enable it to latch onto the female’s cervix during intercourse, thereby increasing the chance of pregnancy.

If it looks pink or red then there could be blood present and medical advice should be sought.

It is thought that the taste of semen can be affected by the environment and diet and anything like smoking, consuming too much alcohol or pollution will all have a detrimental effect on the taste of the seminal fluid. As do STD’s, drug use and ionized radiation (caused my microwaves etc). Eating some foods may help to make the semen taste sweeter so it’s worth experimenting to see if you can alter the taste in any way.

To improve the look, feel, taste and quality of semen, the male should follow a healthy and active lifestyle. This will also help to improve your partner’s fertility.

How much semen is produced and ejaculated?

Sperm, on average, take up to 70 days to manufacture and are made exclusively within the testicles. When the man ejaculates approximately 2 to 5ml of semen is produced. In simpler terms, this amount would be equal to a teaspoon of semen. So, not very much at all which will make swallowing it easier to cope with. Once ejaculated into the woman’s vagina, sperm can then live up to 7 days.

If I swallow it, will it do me any harm?

No, of course not! Believe it or not, there are benefits to swallowing his semen but it is only miniscule! But, that shouldn’t mean that you should do it. If you still feel uncomfortable about doing it or just the thought of it makes your stomach churn, then don’t ever feel pressurized into it.

What if I don’t like the taste?

Then don’t swallow it! You can always choose to spit it out but that can spoil the mood if you suddenly have to run to the bathroom. To avoid this, you could always have him ejaculate all over your breasts instead. Or try discreetly spitting it into a tissue without him noticing. It’s probably best to build him up to an orgasm using your mouth and then finish him off with your hand or tongue thereby avoiding him coming into your mouth at all. Another alternative is to put a condom on before he gets to the point of no return, then when he comes it will go into the tip of the condom and not into your mouth. There are plenty of different tasting condoms on the market to make this method easier to bear.

If I decide to swallow it, what’s the best way of doing it?

There is no correct way of doing it but if you’re not used to the idea then try not to have him ejaculate too deep into your mouth and throat. This will likely trigger off the gag reflex which will make you uncomfortable and may alter the romantic mood. Control how far he thrusts into your mouth by using your hand. This way, when he does come it will only be so far into your mouth. Once he’s finished, swallow it quickly then chances are you won’t get to taste it too much!
