Sex Toys for Anal Play

By Carrie White on

Despite being one of the most controversial acts of sexual stimulation, anal play can also be one of the most erotic and intense forms of sexual pleasure around. There is, of course, an element of naughtiness about the whole affair but doesn’t that make things that little bit more exciting?

Widely thought of as just a homosexual act, anal sex is also a safe and healthy way to expand sexual repertoire for heterosexual men, women and couples as well. So, the fact is, if you practice anal sex it doesn’t mean you’re gay, far from it!
But, it is also one of those things that can cause reactions of horror and disgust so, basically if it doesn’t float your boat, don’t feel you have to take part. For those who do wish to explore, there are a variety of anal sex toys to broaden your experience of this very intimate act.

So What Toys are Available for Anal Sex?

Butt Plugs
Butt plugs are also called plugs or anal plugs and are shorter than vibes and are usually inserted into the anus with the view of staying in the one place. They are ideal for use if you just want something inserted but don’t need any additional stimulation of your anus. Or if you so choose they can be manipulated for extra pleasure. Many people will insert a butt plug and continue with day to day activities or make love as normal.
They are narrower at the tip than at the base and even butt plugs have a flared base for safety. It’s important to lubricate the plug well and continue to lubricate whilst using. If the lube dries up, you’ll be in deep trouble!
Consider using a butt plug first if you are new to anal sex before moving on to something larger like a vibro or your partner’s penis. Ladies, don’t be afraid to try using a butt plug yourself. They are so designed that they can easily stimulate those hard to reach places in you as well as your male partner’s prostate gland.
Butt plugs are made out of jelly, silicone, acrylic and metal and they can also vibrate. For plugs that stay in for longer periods of time, you can buy ones with bigger heads and longer, narrower stems. These tend to stay put better than your normal plugs.
For beginners go for a slim or small butt plug to help you relax and get used to the sensation of something inside of you. Then gradually move up to the bigger anal plugs as you become more experienced.
Using small butt plugs to begin with will learn to relax your outer sphincter muscles making penetration easier and less painful. If you’re not quite ready for a vibro after playing and experimenting with a butt plug, why don’t you try anal beads?

Anal Beads
Anal beads are often called ‘Thai beads’, and are usually a series of small balls connected to each other by a cord or string. They tend to have a large ring at one end to prevent the beads from getting lost whilst inserted into the rectum. However, it is possible to buy beads that do not have a cord and are connected to each other. These are made from jelly, silicone or hard plastic.
They can be all the same size or they can start off small and then gradually increase in size throughout the length of the beads. Added extras are those that vibrate.
Using anal beads comes down to preference as with any sex toy. They can be inserted slowly and then removed, which causes them to pass over the two sphincter muscles inducing exquisite sensations in many people. Plenty of lube must also be used as with anal vibes and butt plugs. Or they can be inserted and removed when you decide creating a feeling of fullness which can feel good for many.

Anal Vibes/dildos
Make sure that you use vibros and dildos made especially for anal sex. Normal vibros have not been designed with the anus in mind and there is a risk of injury or getting stuck which is something you will want to avoid. Anal vibes are often equipped with a flared base for easy retrieval and to enable easy control of thrusts and depth.
Like normal vibros, anal vibes can have vibrations with varying speeds, smooth surfaces, flexible and strong materials and a good average size. Anal vibes can be used on the outside of your anus to loosen the sphincter muscles which will in turn make penetration of the vibe or penis easier as well as the inside.
Choose a lube designed for anal use that is thick and is also safe to use in conjunction with your toy. Apply the lube liberally to the vibe and to your anus or partner’s anus and make sure you are lying in a comfortable position. Take things slowly and find what is the most comfortable for you and your partner.
If you are new to anal sex, choose a toy that is small and slim or try using an Anal Finger Stimulator ideal for use for beginners. This particular toy will fit on the finger and has a very small plug attached to help you get used to the sensation of something in your rectum.
When you’re ready move up to a bigger or vibrating toy and see how you go. There are so many different varieties of anal vibes you will be literally spoilt for choice! These include vibes that screw, vibrate, rotate and bend!
Or, if you are not keen on vibrations then stick with dildos that are designed with stimulation of the prostate gland in mind. They come in a variety of sizes, colours and materials.

Although many normal sex toys on the market can be used for anal sex, it is recommended that you use toys that are specifically designed for anal play. Here are a few points to consider when you choose and use your anal sex toy:

• For a toy to be deemed safe for anal sex, it must be seamless and have no sharp bits that can cause damage to the rectal wall. It must also not have any parts that can come off easily.

• It must possess a flared or ring base to prevent the toy from being drawn up into the rectum and ‘lost.’ If the worse does happen and the toy is not easily retrievable by you or your partner then please go to the A & E, Casualty or Emergency Department immediately. Don’t feel embarrassed as you’ll be surprised to learn that the medical profession have seen this or similar many times before.

• Remember to use plenty of lubrication!
