Are you au natural, trimmed or shaven?
If you are au natural then you allow your pubic hair to run riot around your genitals and pubic area and that can include above your bikini line and across the top of your thighs. It can also mean your whole pubic area becomes an impenetrable forest. If you are trimmed then you generally tidy up your pubic area, removing hair from above your pubic line, on your thighs and shortening the hair around the whole area. If you’re shaven you remove all hairs from your pubic area. Frequent shaving and application of moisturiser is required to keep the area free from hair and smooth as silk.
Basically it’s all down to personal preference and if you feel happy or comfortable with the idea of shaving your genitals at all. For a lot of men and women, shaving can be a source of pain, irritation or nuisance to keep up with this area of hygiene or cleanliness.
How you can achieve the best shave. It’s important to use the best tools that you can to achieve the perfect shave. Choose a razor specifically designed for female intimate areas. Also, make sure you pick a shaving gel designed for the pubic area and preferable one that contains added moisturising lotions. This way you can be assured of finding a product that will not irritate your vagina. Take into consideration your normal skin type too. If your skin is sensitive, use products that are made for this type alone.
Do Not…
…your boyfriend’s razor to shave your pubic hair. Not only is it likely to be too harsh for your genitals it may also be too blunt. Both problems will increase the likelihood of cuts and nicks.
…use soap. It is way too drying and will irritate your skin.
Do… - Trim as much of the excess hair away as you can with nasal hair or nail scissors. This way the razor won’t become clogged up with hair before it’s had a chance to work properly!
- Soak in the bath for several minutes to warm up the skin and open the pores. This allows for easier removal of the hair.
- Apply a generous amount of shaving oil or gel. Leave to sit for a couple of minutes to soften the hairs. Again, this allows for easier shaving.
- Gently pull the skin taut with one hand and begin to shave downwards with the direction of the growth. Shaving against the growth of the hair will encourage in growing hairs and cuts. Once you have done this, run the razor across the hair to get a really close shave.
- Rinse the razor blades off in clean water after every two strokes to prevent the blades from clogging and leading to nicks and cuts.
- Take as much time as you can.
- When you shave around your labia for women and scrotum for men, again pull the skin taut and shave towards your inner thigh.
- When you have finished to your satisfaction, rinse off any remaining gel with clean water, pat dry and apply lots of moisturiser to soothe any redness and prevent irritation.
After care of your pubic area
To begin with allow the hairs to grow back after 2 or 3 days before re shaving. This will help to prevent the breakout of itchy spots. Gently use a loofah or exfoliating mitt to prevent in growing hairs. Moisturise daily with Baby moisturising cream and lotions that contain Benzoyl Peroxide to treat spots or razor rash.
Other methods of hair removal If you’re not keen on shaving there are several other methods you could try. Find the method that works best for you.
Electric or Battery powered shavers: Choose ones that are designed for the pubic area. Avoid using shavers that pull out hair by the roots (Epilators) for obvious reasons! Try the Lady Shaver or Be Bare Hair Trim Set.
Depilatory creams: Creams that are applied to the hair and are then removed by washing or an applicator. They work by dissolving the hair at skin level. Try the Nads Hair Removal System.
Sugaring and Waxing: Not for the faint hearted! Be careful not to leave the solution on for too long or apply it to too large an area.
