Power up your vibrator – Batteries explained

By Carrie White on

Just as important as choosing the right sex toy for you is making sure that if you choose a battery powered vibrator that the batteries are also up for the job. Sex toys use a significant amount of power and so good, quality, alkaline long life batteries are crucial if you want to get the best out of your favourite toy.  The ideal brand of battery is Duracell but any make or brand with a good reputation for quality will be sufficient i.e. Eveready.

Essential Tips for using Battery powered Sex Toys:

1. Make sure that the batteries that you use are fresh. Either use new batteries or if you prefer to use rechargeable ones, make sure that they are fully charged before use.
2. Let your vibrator run for a few seconds to make sure that the batteries are working okay.
3. If the vibrator fails to start, check to see if the batteries are inserted correctly. One good rule to follow is that if you have two batteries side by side, they should be placed with the positive (+) and the negative (-) in opposite directions. If you need two or more batteries in a row, the positive (+) sides should all be facing in the same direction.
4. Make sure the battery contact points in the vibrator are connecting with the ends of the battery.
5. Always remove batteries from your sex toys when not in use to prevent leaking.
6. If leaking does occur, small patches of corrosion can be removed with a small brush and a little amount of baking soda. Apply Vaseline to the damaged area to prevent further damage.
7. Avoid running the vibrator for longer than 20 – 30 minutes to avoid overheating the motor.
8. In most battery powered toys, a small piece of cloth, ribbon or paper is included in the battery compartment. This is used for keeping the batteries in place and thereby preventing noise from any rattling. It’s best not to remove this from the compartment.
9. If your toy has a cord between the body and the battery pack, be sure not to pull on this cord at any time. Always manipulate the vibrator at the base when in use.
10. If your sex toy is not working properly i.e. insufficient power then you can try taking an eraser and rubbing it over the battery tips to improve the contact.

To help improve your toys overall life, always follow the tips above but, in addition, there are also steps you can take to improve the connection of the batteries which can be a common problem.

To Fix the Spring:

If you look inside the cap of your vibrator there is usually a spring which provides a strong connection between the batteries and the top and bottom of the vibrator. Very often this spring will become flattened over time. Open the top and gently pull the spring out to improve the connection.

Are the Connections blocked?

The piece of material i.e. cloth, paper or ribbon designed to keep the batteries in place and to deaden any noise, could also be blocking the connections of the batteries. Carefully move this out of the way or replace if it is damaged.

Free the Connectors.

Another possibility for poor power is the fact that the connectors themselves can become depressed. In the same ways as you would for the spring, gently pull them out. This will ensure a tight connection between the batteries and the vibrator.

Consider:

• Rechargeable batteries. This way you will never be without working/fresh batteries. They also work out much cheaper in the long run.

So who am I to talk about sex like I am some sort of an expert? I am just someone who thinks we all have a toe-curling, shiver-inducing, neighbors-complaining sex life just waiting to break out of our current habits. I want people to see sex toys the same way they look at the spices in their kitchen...something that will never replace the food in the pantry, but definitely something that makes the meal worth eating.
