Dental Dams were first designed for use in dentist surgeries but are now the thing for preventing STI’s through oral sex. Although the risk is small, it’s still worth protecting yourself if you are not in a long term relationship. They are certainly worth considering if you have any small cuts or sores in your mouth or your sexual partner has in her vagina.
What is a Dental Dam?
A Dental Dam is a piece of latex measuring approximately 4 inches all the way around. It is used to cover your lover’s anus or vagina during oral sex. It acts as a barrier between your mouth and your partner’s natural secretions thereby preventing STI’s from passing through to you.
One disadvantage to Dental Dams is the difficulty in keeping them in place. This must be done either by you as you’re licking or by your partner. Using both hands may be preferable until you’re used to using them. Dental Dams, however, do come in many different flavours to make the whole experience better tasting for you!
Using a Dental Dam
Removed one from its packet, and then run it under a running tap to remove any residue that coats the surface. Check it over to make sure it is completely hole free. Before oral sex, place the Dental Dam over your vulva, covering the clit and the entrance to your vagina. It is possible to use a lube with a Dental Dam but make sure it’s a water-based lubrication. Apply the lube onto the vagina before the Dental Dam, in that case.
As with a condom, never use the same Dental Dam more than once and do not flip it over to use the other side whilst giving oral sex as the whole idea of using one would then be pointless.
Experiment with different tricks and techniques to spice up the whole experience for you and your partner.
Can I make my own?
It is possible to make your own Dental Dam if you have only a condom at hand. Or, if you’re feeling more creative you can also make one out of latex gloves or Saran/Plastic Wrap.
Condom: Find a condom that is not already lubricated, unroll it and cut off the tip and the base before cutting down one side. Now, you’re all ready to go!
Latex Gloves: Cut the latex glove open and wash off any talc that may be inside. Cut off all the fingers and the base, but leave the thumb on. Now, cut down the thumb on the side of the palm. This will leave you with an added place to hold the dam with and four small holes where the fingers used to be for extra use.
Saran/Plastic Wrap: Plastic wrap is your normal plastic wrap found in your kitchen. As it’s transparent, it enables you to be able to see what you’re doing and as it sticks to itself, it’s much easier to keep in place. There’s also a lot of it on a roll, so you can use as much or as little as you need.
